‘Young Charlie’ adds history to cult leader

TRAVERSE CITY — The death of cult leader Charles Manson earlier this week meant work for two Leland podcast producers.

Rebecca Reynolds and Jim Carpenter were both watching headlines as news outlets reported Manson’s deteriorating health, knowing they ultimately would need to re-write and re-record the finale of their latest podcast series chronicling the infamous hippie cult leader — “Young Charlie,” by Hollywood and Crime.

The podcast uses in-depth research to recreate infamous murders of the 20th century into 30-minute audio episodes.

Manson, the mastermind behind the gruesome murders of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others in Los Angeles during the summer of 1969, died Sunday at age 83 while serving a life sentence for his crimes. He died of natural causes but had declining health for years.

The podcast had been high on the charts before news of his death, but it spurred the podcast’s network Wondery to drop the series’ third

An Atlanta mom is accused of murdering two of her young sons and then placing a video call to the children’s father to show him the scene, according to multiple local news reports.

Lamora Williams, 24, is charged with two counts of murder, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

Authorities have not released her children’s cause of death, but Atlanta police said that according to a preliminary investigation, the unnamed boys — ages 1 and 2 – “received burn marks on their bodies at some point, possibly from the stove.”

Williams allegedly told police she had left the children in the care of a relative about noon on Friday and found them dead about 11:30 that night, when she returned home.

However, “at this time investigators do not believe the children’s mother left them with a caregiver,” according to the police statement.

The father of the boys, Jameel Penn, told local TV station WSB and Read more at: http://people.com/crime/atlanta-mom-murders-sons-video-calls-their-father/

Missouri Man Accused of Murdering 2 Young Women Who Vanished Nearly 10 Years Apart

Networks look online to attract young viewers back to TV

NEW YORK — Discovery Communications and Time Warner’s Turner are taking the unusual step of streaming full episodes of new shows online or on apps before they air on TV to attract younger viewers in the face of slipping ratings.

Premium channels like CBS’s Showtime have done this for years to entice new subscribers, but cable networks have not, fearing they might cannibalize TV ratings.

But today viewers have many more choices as streaming companies like Amazon.com and Netflix bring a year-round slate of new shows on top of broadcast television.

As a result, networks need to do more to promote new shows, according to Dave Morgan, head of advertising technology company Simulmedia.

Previously, networks focused all marketing around a show’s premier, said Kevin Reilly, chief creative officer at Turner.
