Tennessee Man Convicted of Raping 10-Year-Old Boy: ‘Disturbing and Appalling’

Jurors did not take long to convict Jeremy Ledbetter, deciding in less than an hour the 29-year-old Tennessee man was guilty of sexually abusing and raping a pre-teen boy, PEOPLE confirms.

After three days of testimony both sides acknowledged was brutal for jurors to hear, Ledbetter, of Nashville, was found guilty of two counts of rape of a child, two counts of aggravated sexual battery of a victim under 13 years old, two counts of inducing sexual activity by a minor, and one count of display of sexual acts to a minor under 13 years old.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the prosecution described it as “one of the most disturbing and appalling cases they had seen.”

At trial, Ledbetter’s young victim testified against him, telling jurors that the rape and abuse began when he was 10 and continued until he turned 12.

Former Tennessee Teacher Accused of Kidnapping Student Asks for Public Defender

Tad Cummins, the former high school teacher charged with kidnapping and sex crimes against his 15-year-old student, asked for a public defender during an appearance in a federal court on Tuesday, PEOPLE confirms.

Tuesday’s hearing in Nashville was the 50-year-old‘s first court appearance after being extradited to Tennessee from California, where he and Elizabeth Thomas were found by authorities after a nationwide manhunt that lasted five weeks.

As he walked into the courtroom, Cummins mouthed “I love you” to his sister and two daughters, a court official tells PEOPLE.

Cummins’ estranged wife, Jill Cummins, who filed for divorce and recently put their home up for sale, was not in attendance.

During the hearing, Cummins affirmed he wanted a public defender because he could not afford a private attorney, the official said.

Teacher Accused of Abducting Teen Student Being Extradited to Tennessee from California

Tad Cummins, the teacher accused of abducting his 15-year-old female student and causing an ongoing AMBER Alert for more than a month, is in the process of being extradited from California to Tennessee, his defense attorney tells PEOPLE.

“He left at about 7:30 Tuesday evening,” assistant federal defender Ben Galloway tells PEOPLE. “I don’t know how long it will take to get him there.”

The U.S. Marshals Service is tasked with bringing 50-year-old Cummins back to Tennessee, where he is facing kidnapping and sex crime charges. Detainees are generally routed through local jails, private correctional facilities and the federal transfer center in Oklahoma City before they reach their final destination, Galloway says.

Cummins and Elizabeth vanished from Maury County, Tennessee, on March 13.

Although Elizabeth is safe, her older brother says her ordeal is far from over.

Cummins, 50, abducted Elizabeth on March 13 after “grooming” her during the school year, authorities allege.

The teen was last seen at a local restaurant that March morning in Maury County, Tennessee. Elizabeth and Cummins were discovered last week in a remote

Tennessee Teacher and Missing 15-Year-Old Exchanged ‘Romantic’ Messages on His School Email: DA

A former Tennessee teacher who allegedly kidnapped a 15-year-old student earlier this month — sparking an ongoing AMBER Alert — exchanged “romantic” and “troubling” messages with the teen through his work email, prosecutors say.

“You could describe it as somewhat intimate in nature,” Maury County, Tennessee, District Attorney Brent Cooper tells PEOPLE of the communication between Mary Catherine Elizabeth Thomas and her accused captor, 50-year-old Tad Cummins.

The messages were “not a conversation expected for a teacher to be having with a 15-year-old student,” Cooper says.

He says the emails came through Cummins’ work, from his job as a health sciences teacher at the at Culleoka Unit High School in Tennessee, where Thomas — who goes by Elizabeth — was a freshman.

She went missing on March 13.

The D.A. says the emails don’t contain anything “really graphic or explicit, but definitely inappropriate. Troubling? Yes.”

Delaware car wash murder suspect caught in Tennessee

A 33-year-old man sought for more than 15 months in the killing of a fellow Delaware car wash employee has been caught in Tennessee.

Tennessee Preacher Accused of Raping Teenage Student After Binding Her with Rope

A Tennessee preacher and teacher’s assistant has been accused of binding and then raping one of the teenage girls from his school, though his defense attorney says he is innocent and “has not committed any crime.”

Law enforcement alleges otherwise: Officials say Mike Ulmer, 53, picked up the victim, 18, from Chester County High School on Feb. 16 and brought her to his home in Henderson, Tennessee.

Ulmer serves as a pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Henderson, and court records show the victim was paid to clean his house.

She is a student at Chester County, where Ulmer also worked, though a source tells PEOPLE he was suspended from his teacher’s assistant position on Feb. 17, moments before he was taken into custody.

The day before Ulmer was arrested, authorities allege he directed the teen to do some cleaning in his office, which is contained within a detached garage on his property.

The victim told investigators that Ulmer allegedly used a rope to bind her wrists
