‘American Crime Story,’ Winter Olympics, ‘This Close’ on Sundance …

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (10/9c, FX): OK, this may not be the happiest way to spend an hour of Valentine’s Day night, but you won’t find a series more gripping than Ryan Murphy’s disturbing psychological portrait of murderer Andrew Cunanan (a stunning Darren Criss). As the storyline continues to go back in time, this week’s episode contrasts the proud coming out of designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) in the pages of The Advocate in 1995 with the sad history of one of Cunanan’s other victims: closeted Naval officer Jeffrey Trail (a heartbreaking Finn Wittrock).

Sundance 2018: ‘American Animals’ is a Wild Ride of Truth and Fiction

Bart Layton expertly explores truth claims in this work of ‘hybrid-fiction.’

In the opening of Bart Layton’s American Animals, a title card reads, “This is not based on a true story.” The middle part of that sentence then fades, now reading, “This is a true story.” So, which is it…or does it even matter? At the heart of American Animals lies a truth. This truth is one that is complicated, having been corrupted by honesty, memory, and ego. Nevertheless, Layton sets out to unfold the narrative in which the truth may in fact be irrelevant.

Layton’s previous film was the 2012 documentary The Imposter. That film was celebrated for its use of highly polished and cinematic reenactments. The film did have its detractors, who criticized it as corrupting the truth through those very scenes. Regardless of the level of manipulation at play, The Imposter shows that the divide between fiction and

Chloë Sevigny on the Nude Murder Scene That Stole the Show at Sundance

“Lizzie is a character I’ve always wanted to play,” said Chloë Sevigny of Lizzie Borden, the troubled Massachusetts socialite notorious for ax-murdering her father and stepmother in 1892—and whom Sevigny portrays in her new biopic Lizzie, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past weekend. “She was a gothic heroine and a gothic icon. I think so many misfits are drawn to her because of that.”

For her first starring role in an American movie, the actress, designer, and perennial cool girl developed the script after being introduced to the deeply flawed historical character by an artist friend in 2010. Even though the story takes place in the Victorian era, many of Lizzie‘s themes are still applicable today: patriarchy, sexism, and LGBT discrimination (Kristen Stewart co-stars as the Bordens’ live-in maid, with an impressive Irish accent, and an implied attraction to her employer).

While Park City, Utah, for the
