Manson Family’s Youngest Member Shares How She Was Seduced by a Madman at Age 14 — Then Helped Send …

Though it’s been more than 50 years since Dianne Lake was a teenager in the Los Angeles area, deep into the counterculture of the 1960s, there’s one memory that stands out to her more than the others: the first time she met Charles Manson.

“He was extremely intelligent,” Lake, now 64 and living outside of L.A., tells PEOPLE. “He had the incredible ability to pick up on other people’s weaknesses and their needs and their desires, and he could fulfill those.”

It’s a skill Manson turned to deadly ends, as Lake would learn.

For the first time in 47 years, she is breaking her silence about living with him and being the youngest member of his cult, the so-called “Manson family.”

In Member of the Family, a new book out Oct. 24 and exclusively excerpted in PEOPLE, Lake details her experiences falling under Manson’s spell — and, eventually, how she was free of him.

In 1967,

Daughter Shares Heartbreak After Her Newlywed Mom Vanishes — Then Stepdad Kills Himself

Savanah Ringer holds out hope that she’ll one day hear from her mother, Jo, who disappeared more than four months ago from her Massachusetts home — but she knows the chances are growing slimmer.

“There’s no closure because we don’t know where she is,” Savanah, 19, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, on newsstands now. “She’s still missing.”

On March 4, Savanah’s stepfather, Chad Reidy reported 39-year-old Jo missing — 48 hours after he said he had last seen her.

He told investigators he spent the day before driving through their hometown of Clarksburg, Massachusetts, looking for his wife of just over two months. He drove through neighboring towns, he said, scanning for skid marks veering off the winding roadways.

“He didn’t call me, my family or anyone,” Savanah says about Reidy, 42. She found out her mother had vanished when

Maureen Johnson shares excerpt from Truly Devious

In March of 2016, EW announced Maureen Johnson’s next series, Truly Devious, a saga about an elite (and probably haunted) boarding school called Ellingham Academy and the bright students who try to solve the murder of a classmate (an internet celebrity, no less). But that’s not the only mystery afoot in the trilogy: Edward J. Ellingham, the school’s founder, spent the final years of his life searching for the person who murdered his wife and child in the 1930s and was never successful, even though the killer taunted police for years.

“The genre is straight-up mystery, which I haven’t done yet,” Johnson, who also wrote the Shades of London and Suite Scarlett YA series, told EW last year. “It features crimes past and present. I’ve touched on infamous crimes of the past and the nature of media, but this one gets to internet fame and

J.S. was an honor student who played the violin and ran on her high school’s track team. But in the spring of 2010, her free-spirited nature began to assert itself and she wanted more.

Living in the Seattle suburbs, the 15-year-old decided to run away to the city. She quickly met a man twice her age who seduced her with gifts and a place to stay.

It didn’t take long for her to trust him. And it didn’t take long for the 32-year-old man to abuse that trust — and J.S. He beat and raped her and posted explicit photos of her in an ad on Backpage.com, forcing her to have sex for money.

• For more about J.S.’s story, subscribe to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

“All the people that responded to the Backpage ad of this ninth-grade girl would come over and engage in
