Back in 1956, Auckland gangsters cut the top off a safe in waterfront offices and walked away with the payroll. Investigative author Scott Bainbridge has written a book on how it happened (file photo).

Scott Bainbridge has heard confessions from 1960s gangsters, pored over old murder files, and had photos handed to him with a warning.

He’s a true crime author, the man whose books inspired the television series The Missing.

His most recent work, The Great NZ Robbery, recounts New Zealand’s biggest heist, which left a wrecked safe and a few scattered notes behind.

The Great NZ Robbery adds to Scott Bainbridge's growing list of books about Kiwi crimes (file photo).

Scott and Laci Peterson: The saga that TV won’t let die

Time was when everyone in the United States, it seemed, wondered what happened to Laci Peterson, Modesto most famous mother-to-be.

The story exploded when her husband’s mistress came forward in early 2003, and again when Laci’s body and that of her unborn son were recovered on the shore of San Francisco Bay. Intrigue reached fever pitch when Scott Peterson was arrested for double-murder and sent to death row after a long, captivating trial in 2004 that spawned made-for-TV movies, books and countless headlines and hours of cable commentary.

The ruckus then died down for several years, allowing Modesto time to heal out of the national limelight.

Until now.

Truth and Lies: The Murder of Laci Peterson,” airing Thursday on ABC, is just the latest in a string of television specials about the compelling case — the sixth this year, with two more scheduled in the fall. AE Network’s “Read more at: http://www.modbee.com/news/article173093346.html

Laci Peterson’s Mom Speaks Out in Documentary: It Was ‘Very Hard to Even Begin to Suspect’ Scott as Killer

In a new ABC documentary about her pregnant daughter’s 2002 murder, Laci Peterson’s mother recalls her own mental anguish over the realization that Laci’s husband, Scott Peterson, might have been involved in her disappearance.

“It was very, very hard to even begin to suspect him, because in the back of my mind I kept thinking, what if he didn’t have anything to do with it?,” says Sharon Rocha in Truth and Lies: The Murder of Laci Peterson, which airs Thursday, September 14 (9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET) on ABC. (An exclusive clip of the trailer is posted above.)

“I mean, it’s not like this is a total stranger that you might be suspecting,” she says. “This is somebody that’s been a member of your family for several years now, and it’s really, you know, the back and forth and the guilt about

Police Detail Scott Peterson’s ‘Strange’ Behavior After Pregnant Wife Vanished — But Before Her Body Was Found

Police didn’t have to look far to find a suspect in the disappearance and death of Laci Peterson: Her husband, Scott Peterson, was almost immediately under scrutiny, thanks in part to his being her spouse — and because of how he acted after she vanished.

“His overall demeanor was so off from what they had seen in their experience as investigators that they completely zeroed in on him,” Ted Rowlands, a local TV reporter, explains in an exclusive clip from Tuesday night’s episode of AE’s six-part The Murder of Laci Peterson, which retraces the case’s history.

According to Jon Buehler, now a retired police detective and then an investigator looking into what happened to Laci, her husband’s behavior was “strange for the circumstances.”

For example, “that first night,” he says in the clip above, Scott seemed overly conscientious of the neatness and

Could Scott Peterson Actually Be Innocent of Murdering His Pregnant Wife?

Laci Peterson went missing on Christmas Eve, 2002 in Modesto, California, where she lived a seemingly happy, trouble-free life, with her husband, Scott Peterson. She was eight months pregnant when she disappeared while Scott was out fishing. Nearly four months later, on April 13, the body of a late term fetus was found washed up in the San Francisco Bay. The next day, Laci’s body was found, limbs hacked off and badly decomposed.

What followed was a series of circumstantial events that would lead Laci’s husband to receive the death penalty for murdering her and their unborn child. Scott Peterson is still on death row now, and has launched an appeal to reopen his case this year. Many believe he did it, but with no forensic evidence to say that he did, some think the jury convicted him based solely on emotion. You can find out more about the crime and
