Is Maura Murray Alive? New Details In The Case Are Hard To Come By

It’s been nearly 14 years since Maura Murray mysteriously vanished, leaving behind little more than a trail of confusion and a string of tangled theories. But as Oxygen prepares to rehash her long-cold case for its latest true crime docuseries, one central question still remains: Is Maura Murray alive in 2017?

Over the last decade, many have speculated about what could have happened to the then-21-year-old nursing student. Many think she was killed as a result of foul play, others believe she ran away, and some think she died of exposure after fleeing from her car, which she crashed into a New Hampshire snowbank just before she officially went missing. According to Missing Maura Murray, a podcast focused on her disappearance, the few witnesses who spoke with police claimed that she denied their assistance, and when the authorities arrived on scene

Maura Murray Missing: Maggie Freleng Talks Oxygen Series – People

Investigative journalist Maggie Freleng, an ardent true crime fan, has found herself in the middle of a true crime story of her own — gripped by a simple, seemingly unanswerable question: What happened to Maura Murray?

Murray, like Freleng, attended the University of Massachusetts, though years apart. Murray disappeared without a trace while she was still a student, when she packed up her things at the Amherst campus and drove north to New Hampshire.

Much remains unclear about what happened after Murray left school, though it appears she vanished near a snowbank in New Hampshire where her car crashed on Feb. 9, 2004.

In the intervening years, the mystery of her going missing has spread throughout the Internet, inspiring intense rumor and conspiracy, as well as fact-based reporting from reporters.

Freleng, one such example of the latter, spent months in the area digging into the case and the theories around it. (She first

Journalist Maggie Freleng Investigates ‘The Disappearance of Maura Murray’ on Oxygen

It gets cleared up in a later episode that he had sat down with the police, but those conversations were not considered ‘formal interviews.’ Fred is a really unique person, not like any of my family members. Art, who is close with Fred and was the one to introduce me, said Fred is a salty, old, crusty man. Fred will tell you that’s kind of how he is! He’s an old-school, traditional, Catholic, Boston man. People really question his motives, but the reality is that he is a private person and now his entire personal life is being dissected under a microscope. He has poured his heart, soul and energy into this. I didn’t get the impression that he is withholding at all. He could talk for hours and hours about Maura.

Meet The Men Who Have Given Years Of Their Life To Crack The Maura Murray Case

Tim Pilleri and Lance Reenstierna, who will be seen on Oxygen’s “The Disappearance of Maura Murray,” premiering Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8:15/7:15c, have always been interested in trying to solve mysteries. The two met in 2001 after Lance hired Tim to work on a murder mystery dinner theater play that Lance wrote. Together, they wrote, and acted in a handful of other murder mystery dinner plays.

A few years after they met, Maura Murray vanished. On February 9, 2004, the 21-year-old nursing student emailed her professors at University of Massachusetts  and her employer requesting time off after death in her family. The death turned out to be made up. That night, she crashed her car into a tree in New Hampshire. A few witnesses called the police, and when they showed up, Maura was gone.

The mysterious disappearance intrigued Lance and Tim. Like Maura, both are from New England. So,

The Mystery of Maura Murray, College Student Who Suddenly Vanished After 2004 Crash

What happened to Maura Murray?

It’s a simple question without a publicly-known answer, as Murray remains missing 13 years after she apparently vanished near a snowbank in New Hampshire where her car crashed on Feb. 9, 2004.

Murray, then a 21-year-old nursing student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, had reportedly emailed to tell her professors that she was taking time off to deal with a death in her family. She packed up and she drove away.

Her car, when it was found at the site of the wreck about 140 miles away from school on Route 112, still had her things inside, including a spilled box of wine, according to multiple news reports. But her wallet was reportedly missing, and so was Murray.

Despite witnesses who said they seemed to see her outside her car immediately after the crash — including a bus
