True-crime shows underscore flaws in media frenzies

 

True-crime stories used to keep me awake some nights.

Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” and Ann Rule’s “The Stranger Beside Me” served as gateways to an addiction that left me nervous about violent crime, not to mention the possibility that casual acquaintances might be homicidal psychopaths.

When I eventually kicked the habit and returned to novels, I was able to breathe easier.

But then true-crime television went upscale, and I was forced to pay attention.

A millionaire murder suspect became an unlikely HBO star in Andrew Jarecki’s “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst — and ended up under arrest.

The success — and quality — of the Peabody Award-winning first season of the podcast “Serial,” and of shows such as Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” and FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” inspired new long-form projects.

Vox Media Sells Its First Original Show: SB Nation’s True-Crime Sports Docu-Series for Go90 (EXCLUSIVE)

NBCUniversal-backed digital-media player Vox Media has sold its first original TV show to Verizon’s Go90: SB Nation’s “Foul Play,” a 10-episode true-crime docu-series about the shadowy underbelly of sports, will debut exclusively later this year on the mobile-centric Go90 video service.

The show is produced by Vox Entertainment, the company’s L.A.-based development, production and distribution division. Each episode of “Foul Play” will explore an untold story of the sports world’s most legendary scandals, crimes, heists, and falls from grace. The series episodes will run approximately 10 minutes, with exclusive clips and additional extended content available for each episode on SB Nation.

Sales round-up: Banijay sells Diana doc; TCB inks deal with Essential Media

Banijay Rights sells Diana doc to Euro, U.S. nets

Banijay Rights, the international distribution arm of Banijay Group, has inked deals in the U.S., Europe, CEE and South Africa for Diana’s Death: The Search for the Truth.

U.S. network Reelz and AE Networks for the UK and South Africa have secured the one-hour doc. Sky Italia has acquired the special, while Italian public broadcaster TV8 has also secured rights. The film has been picked up in Spain by ATRES for commercial-free TV broadcaster Mega and by AMC Networks International Iberia for ODISEA, in Israel by DBS and in CEE by TVN for Poland as well as public broadcaster RTVS in Slovakia.

The special, produced by Tony Comiti and directed by Manuel Laigfrefor for M6 in France, explores Diana’s death through the Mercedes car that crashed. According to the doc, the car had been badly damaged in an earlier road crash

Oxygen Media has set Sunday, October 1, 7 PM ET/PT for the premiere of Criminal Confessions true crime reality series from executive producer Dick Wolf and Warner Bros. Shed Media.

Criminal Confessions delves into the psychological showdown that takes place inside actual police interrogation rooms and dissects what it takes to yield a confession. In each hourlong episode, police officers and detectives walk viewers through their strategy, as interviews with the suspects’ and victims’ friends and family shed light on the details of the case.
