NC Toddler Freezes to Death on Porch as Mom Slept Inside with Drugs in Her System

A North Carolina woman whose 3-year-old son froze to death on their porch earlier this year pleaded guilty on Monday to an involuntary manslaughter charge, PEOPLE confirms.

Jamie Basinger was unconscious, with drugs in her system, as her son, Landyn, was dying outside her home in March, according to a Burke County court official.

Following her plea this week, Basinger was sentenced to 19 and 32 months in prison. That sentence was suspended and she was give three years’ probation, with credit for 245 days already served, according to Basinger’s attorney, Frank Webster, and the Morganton News Herald.

Webster tells PEOPLE she will only serve her remaining months in prison if she violates her probation, meaning her release from behind bars is immediate.

Basinger was also originally charged with felony child abuse in Landyn’s death, but prosecutors dropped that count as part of a plea deal, according to Webster and the

Couple Charged After Woman Was Found Dead & Her 8-Year-Old Daughter Tied-Up Inside Hawaii Home

A couple was charged with second-degree murder on Monday after law enforcement discovered a 51-year-old woman bludgeoned to death inside a Hawaii home, officials told local news outlets.

Stephen Brown, 23, and Hailey Dandurand, 20, were charged with second-degree murder, as well as burglary in the first degree and kidnapping. Brown’s bail was set at $1 million and Dandurand was set at $500,000, according to records obtained by PEOPLE.

On Thursday afternoon, Telma Boinville was reportedly hired to clean the two-story vacation house where her body was found by tourists arriving from Australia. Her 8-year-old daughter was discovered upstairs where she was alive but tied up, officials said.

CIA Experiments, Conspiracies and a Mysterious Death: Inside Netflix’s New True Crime Series

Netflix’s upcoming docuseries Wormwood mixes fiction and nonfiction to investigate a thicket of decades-long conspiracy theories around the CIA — and how one family may have paid the price for the agency’s secrets.

But to Errol Morris, its Oscar-winning director, Wormwood‘s key mystery is fairly simple.

“It’s a room,” he tells PEOPLE of the six-part series, exclusively previewed above. “When you boil it all down, there’s a room in this hotel on Seventh Avenue in New York overlooking the old Penn Station. Just after Thanksgiving 1953, Frank Olson, an Army scientist, goes out a window 13 floors onto the pavement below. What happened in that room? What in God’s name happened in that room?”

“All of Wormwood is an attempt to reconstruct that, to reconstruct the mystery of that black box, the four walls of that room and what transpired,” Morris continues. “Was Frank Olson committing suicide, was this an accident or was

Inside the Heartbreak and Resilience of the Tiny Texas Town Shattered by Church Mass Shooting

The town of Sutherland Springs, Texas, has only a few hundred residents — the kind of place so small that Sunday morning’s mass shooting at a local church didn’t just shock, it shattered.

“It kind of makes your heart drop,” resident Sarah Fuertez tells PEOPLE. “You are taken aback. … You don’t think it would happen out here, that it would hit so close to home. I see something like this in a bigger city — it makes you wonder what is really safe. If we aren’t safe out here, where are we safe?”

According to historical records, there was one store and one post office in Sutherland Springs in 1989, and 362 people lived there in 2000. Fuertez says there are less than 800 people living there now, and the town has no stoplights.

At least 26 people were

Inside the Hunt for the Golden State Serial Killer Who Killed 12 and Raped 45 in California

It was around 6:30 a.m., on October 5, 1976, when Jane Sandler heard footsteps running toward her bedroom in her ranch style house in Citrus Heights, California, a middle class suburb of Sacramento.

Thinking it was her husband, who had just left for work for the day, Sandler, a 30-year-old Air Force reserve captain, said, “What did you forget?”

That’s when she looked up and saw an intruder wearing a black ski mask shining a flashlight in her face. As she clutched her 3-year-old son next to her, he put a large knife to her chest and muttered, “Shut up, I will kill you.”

The intruder quickly tied their hands, blindfolded them, and tied her feet using sheets from her bed.

“He had this ritual of ripping and tearing these sheets,” Sandler, now 71 and the author of Frozen in Fear: A True Story

Inside the Moment the Manson Family’s Youngest Member Learned the Cult Was Slaughtering People: ‘I Was Horrified’

While the country was still reeling from the news of a two-day murder spree across Los Angeles that left seven people dead, a then-16-year-old girl named Dianne Lake was learning first-hand details about the 1969 slayings that would change her life forever.

“I was shocked. I was horrified,” recalls Lake, now 64, about the night she listened to Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten discuss how they committed murder for their cult leader, Charles Manson.

Lake was not a participant in the violence. For the first time in 47 years, she is breaking her silence about growing up in the 1960s counterculture and how she wound up as the youngest person living with Manson and his so-called “family.”

In Member of the Family, a new book out Oct. 24 and exclusively excerpted in
