Library Corner – The Sentinel

‘Murder and Mayhem in Kentucky’ book discussion

Join us for the third and final session of a three-part scholar led book discussion series that will cover “true stories of bone chilling cruelty and heart wrenching heroism” that took place in Kentucky and other Appalachian states. The anthology, Appalachian Murders and Mysteries by James M. Gifford and Edwina Pendarvis, will be utilized during the entire series.

The facilitator will be EKU’s true crime author Keven McQueen. He’ll discuss the murder of Mary Magdalene Pitts, the Skyline Drive murders of Don and Brenda Howard, and Charles Manson’s ties to the Tri-State area.

This session will take place on Thursday, October 12 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Kentucky Room at the Laurel County Public Library.

HINGHAM LIBRARY CORNER: Evening with the Author event Thursday

Wednesday, March 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. — Attention, history buffs! The latest Pop-Up Exhibit about the Hingham Shipyard will feature photos, documents, records, and other interesting historical items relating to this fascinating part of Hingham’s history and economy! Don’t miss this one-day-only event.

Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. — You’re invited to the next “An Evening with the Author” event featuring author R. Marc Kantrowitz and his intriguing new book, “Old Whiskey and Young Women: American True Crime Tales of Murder, Sex and Scandal,” which explores some of the most notorious legal cases in American history.

These cases have at least two things in common — their notorious characters titillated, if not repulsed, the entire nation when they first occurred — and they are nearly totally forgotten today.

HINGHAM LIBRARY CORNER: Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with music, stories

Tuesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. — Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day a little early! Stop by to listen to talented multi-instrumentalist Jeff Snow, who will share traditional Celtic music and stories of Scotland, Ireland, and England.

Upcoming Events:

Sunday, March 12 at 3 p.m. — For your listening pleasure, prolific recording and touring artist Steve Marchena will perform a solo guitar concert as part of the library’s Sunday Sounds Special Series.

Marchena has performed throughout North America and Europe and has shared the stage with such well-known performers as J. Geils and Jon Finn of The Boston Pops. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has gone on to teach Contemporary Rock/Metal Ensemble there. This is a not-to-be-missed event!

This series is presented in partnership with the Boston Classical Guitar Society and sponsored by Coastal Heritage Bank.
