The 7 Biggest Lies in ‘Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders’

Dick Wolf has broken my heart with his first venture into true crime, “Law Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders,” which ended on Tuesday night. The “LO” franchise has always been my favorite ever procedural series, but this mini-series takes the “true” out of true crime.

Yes, we are warned that characters and events may have been changed, but the creators should not be allowed to alter the facts of the crime. That defeats the purpose of revisiting a gruesome and puzzling double murder that captivated the country for years.

Working with Diane Sawyer, I was the lead producer of ABC News’ coverage of the case. I still have encyclopedic memory of so many details. The family ferret was named “Chipper” and the brother’s favorite stuffed animals were Cookie Monster One and Two. I also clearly recall how the lead prosecutor would look for “tells” if Leslie Abramson

Back in 1956, Auckland gangsters cut the top off a safe in waterfront offices and walked away with the payroll. Investigative author Scott Bainbridge has written a book on how it happened (file photo).

Scott Bainbridge has heard confessions from 1960s gangsters, pored over old murder files, and had photos handed to him with a warning.

He’s a true crime author, the man whose books inspired the television series The Missing.

His most recent work, The Great NZ Robbery, recounts New Zealand’s biggest heist, which left a wrecked safe and a few scattered notes behind.

The Great NZ Robbery adds to Scott Bainbridge's growing list of books about Kiwi crimes (file photo).

Netflix’s biggest critic responds with his own paid service

Tired of people watching its shows on Netflix and Amazon, FX Networks is persuading pay-TV operators to sell an alternative: FX+, a paid service offering hits “American Horror Story” and “Atlanta” without advertisements.

The network on Monday announced plans to make FX+ available for $5.99 a month to the 4 million or so people who pay Cox Communications, which joins Comcast in selling the service. FX, owned by 21st Century Fox, is in the process of making deals with other pay-TV providers that will be announced in the coming months.

FX Networks Chief Executive Officer John Landgraf created FX+ so customers could watch all his shows on demand without decamping for Hulu, Amazon and Netflix. Landgraf has said Netflix is far more dangerous. Netflix has paid Fox for licenses to its shows, enticing millions of viewers away from Fox’s own TV networks.

The company, which will spend $7 billion on programming next year,
