‘We found the needle in the haystack’: Golden State Killer suspect arrested after sudden DNA match

More than 40 years after the so-called “Golden State Killer” began terrorizing California, raping dozens of women and killing at least 12 people, authorities announced Wednesday that they had arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo, charging him with capital murder, after a recent DNA match.

His arrest in a sleepy Sacramento suburb offered a shocking, abrupt development in what had long been one of the most notorious unsolved string of crimes in U.S. history.

The gruesome attacks unfolded across California for more than a decade during the 1970s and 1980s, shattering families and frightening communities. Then the crimes stopped, remaining a mystery for a generation, with little sign the case would ever be solved.

The trail suddenly and ultimately led authorities to DeAngelo, a former police officer living in Citrus Heights, a city outside Sacramento. Authorities said DeAngelo — who was an officer during the years when police believe the attacks began —

Family-of-8’s Missing Child Found in the Water Weeks After Their SUV Plunged Off Calif. Cliff

A body found last week near where a Washington family plummeted off a cliff in Northern California has been identified as one of the family’s three missing children, PEOPLE confirms.

The Mendocino County Coroner Division announced on Tuesday that through DNA analysis the remains of 12-year-old Ciera Hart were positively identified, according to a news release obtained by PEOPLE.

Authorities also confirmed that the girl’s name was Ciera — not “Siera,” as previously reported — and that she was 12 years old at the time of the crash, not 15, as they had said.

Parents Jennifer and Sarah Hart and their six kids are presumed dead after their car plunged 100 feet down to the water off the Pacific Coast Highway sometime in late March. Their SUV was found on March 26.

Shortly after discovering the wreck, five members of the family were found dead at the bottom of the cliff, including Jennifer and

Ala. Husband Is Accused of Killing Wife Found Partially Naked Outside Home — But Victim’s Mom Defends Him

An Alabama man accused of murdering his wife has an unlikely champion for his defense: the victim’s mother, who insists the suspect was a good man and a loving husband.

A 19-year-old neighbor on her way to work found Kathleen “Kat” West’s body face-down in the street across from the couple’s Calera, Alabama, home at about 5 a.m. on Jan. 13.

Kat, 42, was naked except for a sports bra, bleeding from the head, and had her cell phone nearby under a green liquor bottle that appeared to be intentionally placed there, according to witness descriptions of the scene reported by AL.com.

Charging documents say she died Jan. 12 after being hit in the head with a Lucid Absinthe bottle. The bottle had Kat’s blood and a single set of fingerprints that authorities allege belonged to 44-year-old Jeff West, Kat’s husband and the father of the couple’s then 12-year-old daughter,

Body Found in Ocean Near Site of Family-of-8’s Deadly Crash

Authorities announced on Saturday that they found a body in Northern California near the spot where a Washington family was killed after their SUV plunged off a cliff. Police said they have yet to determine whether the body belongs to one of the family’s missing children.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday from the California Highway Patrol, informing them about a body that had been found “in the surf” around Highway 1, an area which is “in the immediate vicinity of the recent Hart Family crash.”

On March 26, five of the eight members of the Hart family — parents Jennifer and Sarah and three of their children — were discovered dead after their vehicle was found at the bottom of a 100-foot cliff off the Pacific Coast Highway in Northern California, authorities have said.

Authorities have also said that Devonte,
