Exclusive Interview – Composer Mac Quayle on American Crime Story, working with Ryan Murphy, and more

Alex Moreland talks to composer Mac Quayle about American Crime Story, working with Ryan Murphy, and more…

So, how would you describe the sound style of The Assassination of Gianni Versace?

After working on pretty much all of it, which we’re ready to finish finally the last episode now, I feel like I can best describe the score as if Giorgio Moroder scored Silence of the Lambs in an Italian villa. It’s an electronic sound that helps to tell the story of this really creepy serial killer, with also elements of Italian classical music.

What was the starting point when you came to work on this?

Yeah, I mean, you know, those elements I just described were brought up in conversation about Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer, a super creepy guy, and we knew we needed something to help tell that part of the story. We

How Did Kathleen Peterson Die? Watch an Exclusive Clip from An American Murder Mystery: The Staircase

In the early morning hours of June 23, 1993, Manassas, Virginia manicurist Lorena Bobbitt crept into the bedroom she shared with her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt. While John—who had been drinking heavily—slept, she proceeded to mutilate his genitals with a 12-inch kitchen knife. When a drunken John woke up, the sheets were covered in blood; Lorena ran to her car, knife and lump of flesh in tow. Not quite sure what to do next, she wound up tossing part of his shaft out the window.

The scene was so morbid and so titillating that the news media couldn’t get enough. From the time Lorena performed the amputation to her acquittal seven months later, the story of a marriage so broken it ended in genital disfigurement ran almost around the clock.

But reporters had a major hurdle to clear: The word penis had never been printed or spoken aloud

Rafael Motamayor chats with documentarist Tiller Russel on how to get criminals to trust you, believing an unbelievable heist story and more…

Just before I went to SXSW, I was looking through the film slate trying to build my schedule for films to see during the festival. The description read “OPERATION ODESSA is a true crime documentary about a Russian mobster, a Miami playboy and a Cuban spy who sold a Soviet submarine to a Colombian drug cartel for $35 million.” I didn’t even finish the rest of the paragraph before I emailed the film’s publicist and asked for a link to watch the documentary.

The main subject of the documentary is a Russian gangster who used to work as an enforcer for the Gambino mob
