Fox Will Counterprogram Emmys With the Manson Family

For broadcast networks not airing the Primetime Emmys in a given year, the night of the show usually means airing either reruns or a special as counterprogramming.

Fox is going the latter route this year, with a special about as far removed from a glitzy celebration of the industry as possible: a two-hour documentary about the Manson family.

Inside the Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes, will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT Monday, Sept. 17, opposite NBC’s Emmy broadcast. The special will feature footage from the Manson family compound at Spahn Ranch that “shows — in real time — how the cult members were brainwashed under Manson’s influence,” according to executive producer Simon Andreae.

“The Manson murders are some of history’s most shocking and grisly crimes,” said Rob Wade, president alternative entertainment and specials at Fox. “The Lost Tapes offers incredible insight into how such unsuspecting people fell under Manson’s demonic spell
